HalieusA uniquely Christian executive education
and strategic planning program of Horizon Accountants
What is Halieus? This word is the original language in the New Testament Gospels that describes Luke, Peter, James and John. The word hal means one who works at sea. Jesus addresses these men as those who work at sea. They earn a living at sea and now they would catch men. These men were business owners. Now they were asked to follow Jesus.
The apostle Paul uses the word koinonos in some of his letters found in the New Testament. This word means partner, associate or sharer in anything. Paul describes others as partners in the gospel. The expansion of the early church included all types of people in different places. It is not surprising seeing the call of business owners as integral as they can relate to the marketplace efficiently and provide resources.
One of the great challenges today is to carry on in this same approach. The establishment of Kingdom businesses or renewing a commitment to this lifestyle is needed for global missions. It is time to align the local church, vocation, preparation, business, missions and evangelism into an integrated model.
How is Halieus different and what do we believe is possible to add value to a Christian organization?
Strategic Planning
What is strategy? Many times innovation and strategy are intertwined. However, they are vastly different terms. Innovation is a new idea, method or device. Where as strategy is a set of maneuvers or a careful plan or method. A strategist is one skilled in strategy. Strategic planning is the art of devising plans toward a goal. For the Christian, innovation and strategy begin with purpose and what you believe. These responses are generally formed out of a biblical worldview.
We have learned that strategic planning drives innovation toward action. We have developed a model called Horizo, to facilitate and guide strategic planning for businesses and organizations. We have adapted two of the quadrants to include emphasis on the gifts of ministry and the Spirit, prayer and setting foundations toward establishing Kingdom businesses.
Kingdom Business
One of the great needs in the body of Christ today is an integrated model to relate to the marketplace. We do not necessarily want to transform it but be more effective and purposeful in it. What are the necessary ingredients toward Kingdom business?
An important part of this process is time spent on educational campuses. One of the concerns in our current culture is that specialization creates situations that isolate. So the call comes and there is no cohesive approach to enable the call to incubate and become alive.
Teachers must include call and vocation in the classroom. We need to be more of a shepherding community and learn to direct with wise counsel.
